The Project:
We were hired by VICE to produce a series of composited shots for a video about the Domino Sugar Factory renovations. The building was being converted from a derelict but iconic factory on the Brooklyn waterfront into -- at the time -- a large office space. Due to the building being deemed historically significant, great efforts were being made to preserve the outer facade while reinforcing and eventually rennovating the interior space. We were given a series of shots from the VICE editing team to track, animate, and composite before delivering back to them, in order to show off the vision for transforming these spaces.
My Role:
As a junior artist, I worked to track all of the shots in Syntheyes and prep a compositing pipeline in Fusion (4 in total, 2 exterior and 2 interior, pictured here). At the time, I was the only person in the studio proficient in this kind of VFX pipeline. I also developed a pipeline in Fusion for animating the linework using a WorldSpace Coordinate pass, some MatteID passes, and Fusion's 3D volume nodes. While it left some small fringe artifacting that we could have resolved by rendering the linework in several passes instead of one, we had a fairly tight budget and couldn't afford the time to re-tool our pipeline.
