We started this project after working on a competition located here in Helsinki, Finland. We wanted to experiment and push the atmosphere in a direction that just would not have worked for short-form competition video, where every second is often spent trying to convey some meaningful information to a panel of judges. We settled on a snowy day, just before dawn, when the city is only just waking up. To further push the sense of dreaminess that you get when walking around a quiet city, we animated everything but the camera on 3's, giving the people and vehicles a stop-motion quality.
I was the main artist on this project, inheriting a model of the city and shoreline but not much else. I developed the look of these shots, set up shaders and lighting for all shots, and managed post production. I also handled customizing the characters with puffy jackets and hats, mixing mocap data for their animations, and then baking it down to the stopmotion aesthetic. For that, I developed a small 3ds Max plugin called BakeAllAnim.
