The Project:
We were hired by REX and the NYC Performing Arts Center to produce a promotional video for their new venue in lower Manhattan. Prominently located next to the World Trade Center, the PAC wanted a way to unveil the new building early and showcase the new venues and flexibility it would bring to the city. Important to REX was the specially sourced and cut marble facade, with pieces hand-picked for symmetry across all sides of the building and cut thin enough to glow like a lamp at night, or to allow ambient lighting in during the day.
My Role:
I worked as a production artist on this, developing the texturing and shading for the marble facade, lighting many of the shots, setting up animated crowds, and doing both the theater and exterior timelapse animations. For the marble, we were given extensive reference photography to work from and I was able to generate a set of maps to drive the surface and sub-surface shading on them. We were able to drive that effect with real lighting in all shots instead of falling back on emissive shading, which allowed us to play with shadow and transmission through the facade.
